Fukuura Tunnels [Okinoshimacho]
Tunnels built on the wisdom of Earth and her people
With construction stretching over three generations, from the late 1800's to the mid 1900's Showa, these are often called the Three-Period Fukuura Tunnels. The small tunnels closest to the sea were first dug in the late 1800's, and are called Koma Tunnel; the large tunnel dug out using explosives during the mid 1900's is called the Window Tunnel because of the skylights that were dug out. In these tunnels you can observe the evolution of civil engineering and transportation technology.
